She's the original technophobe, and certainly wouldn't consider learning something new right now - she has a 14-hour a day job and is near the end of a PhD. Nevertheless I am seriously considering putting in an old hdd and installing Mandrake to get xine running, and telling her to boot to that just to play dvds.
