I found that I could run satisfactorily as root, but not as user. I changed permissions as directed, but to no avail. (Also msec kept changing the permisisons back.) The end result was that the people who had tried to help me came to the conclusion that devfs was the problem. I'm signing off in a few hours, for a holiday.
