Neal,

My original post on this subject wasn't totally correct. I have corrected
that information in a later post to state that only in Solo, you can either
remove the balance tube and plug it or leave it in place as delivered
(without alteration), your choice. But, in racing the balance tube must be
removed and plugged.

The balance tube was only put on the Rotax 493s for snowmobile drivability
issues just off idle. Once the throttle is cracked open toward and at WOT,
the balance tube has absolutely no affect on the performance of the engine.

Why the CRB required the tube be removed is an open question. Perhaps they
did not have all the information or perhaps they felt that someone would be
playing around if the tube was left in place. I don't know, but in Solo, we
felt it had no performance value at all and could be checked rather easily
for alteration(s).

Sorry for any confusion my first post might have had.

As far as the pull starter is concerned, the CRB has put forth wording for
2007 that would allow that device to be removed or left in place, again your
choice. If the BOD approves that recommendation at their meeting this week
which may still be ongoing as I type, you'll get your wish.

Subject: Re: [F500] Rotax 493 installation

Art,

Is this correct? Myself, (and a couple others in the Southeast) with 493s
had to remove and plug the balance pipe holes for roadracing. I would love
to put mine back on, and also remove the pullstarter, but I'm still not
sure of the correct ruling on these two items. Some concrete wording in
fastrack would be great!
