The AMWs had/have huge variations in cylinder porting, I have
8 cylinders around and no 2 are what I'd call alike.
With NO other changes on the engine I have seen main
jet size change by 3-4 full steps just by swapping
cylinders. The "old style" cylinders were hand deburred
( ported) at the factory and I think they were better
than the newer style.
I think if they were setup correctly and you stayed just
a little bit conservative with the variables ( jetting, timing
and "squish" ) they would have given ok service for
a "race" engine but not on par with a Kaw or 494.
It's tough to get the fuel curve correct for them
with the supplied carbs. What's great for one driver
won't necessarily work for another.
In solo use my co-driver would create peak
egts about 100-125 deg. higher then I did.
With careful tweaking I've gotten rid of most of
the difference.
