Joe's suggested fix uses a C extension that is present in Visual Studio but
not in gcc. Factor can only be compiled with gcc.

I've never had stability problems with Windows XP. Besides, you'll have to
switch OSes eventually; Windows 2000 is 9 years old and soon Microsoft will
cease to issue security updates. If you dislike XP and Vista, you could
always try Linux or Mac OS X.
