I've done both, and I wouldn't have missed any of 'em. In my experience, they're fulfilling in different ways, at different times. It may be that one *or* the other is exclusively "right" for some people, but I have the sneaking suspicion that for many who hew to one and eschew the other, they've limited themselves unnecessarily.
