Here’s another question that has nothing to do with the usual topics of FFL,
but FFL is a handy place to get advice on just about everything, since our
membership is diverse and well-informed.

We have to buy a new water heater. Electric models are not as economical to
operate as gas models, but I’m wondering what will happen to the price of
natural gas over the next 10-20 years. It is becoming more scarce and
expensive, just as oil is. Also, it seems to me that there will be huge
breakthroughs in solar over that time period, such that we’ll end up
generating our own electricity with photovoltaics on the roof well within
the lifetime of our water heater. Should that happen, we’ll end up with free
hot water. We don’t want to get solar hot water panels on the roof, because
they’re expensive and we probably don’t have a space large enough to hold a
storage tank.

Any opinions?
