You're right--jokes and ironies need significant linguistic or contextual signals that can easily be pointed to. If you haven't really done that and then claim afterwards that we were all supposed to have gotten it, or we're more stupefied than you are, you'll come off as lame, disingenuous and mean-spirited. But you did build in enough signals for anyone, with the possible exception of Germans and Swedes, to get it.
