Well, the writing wasn't as tight, but its from a different era, and honestly, there have been other Sci-Fi shows of similar calibre-at least for their time. EG, Babylon 5.
And, while the nuances get lost in translation , the best anime series go at least as in-depth into these issues. Oh, but its a cartoon, so it can't really be good drama.
