No, I can see why you would see it this way, but I am actually  
asking for a credible counter to Neuharth's position.

That's not what I take Neuharth to mean -- I believe he means a 
credible voice *in the media*, as opposed to politicians. I could be 
wrong, of course.

A commendable goal. What happens to them along the way these days, I 
wonder?

:-) Good advice; may we both take it to heart. My main point would 
be that the mainstream media don't even *report* let alone emphasize 
a good many of the events that are arguably most important to our 
wellbeing.
