A 2011 conference on Yoganidra, yogic sleep, has been announced by
the Swami Rama research people. Yoganidra is the style of sleep
experienced in turiyatita (Cosmic Consciousness). The researchers
define the state as:

Yoga-nidra (Yogic Sleep) is to be defined as the experience of a
state of Conscious Sleep in which the subject is showing all the
symptoms of deep non-REM sleep, producing delta (1-4 hertz) brain
waves, and is at the same time fully conscious of the events in his
surroundings.

Totally different than witnessing sleep, apparently.

Yes. That's one reason I never took the over-hyped idea of witnessing sleep a la TM seriously. It was clearly just a desperate attempt to make it appear as if they had achieved yoganidra, which MMY had vaguely described but not really taught. Although they did at one time think they had found someone who was conscious during deep sleep, it never materialized.

That's the nice thing about yoganidra, it's quite easy to gauge, with instrumentation that's been around for decades. And of course, if you're successful, you simply need a lot less sleep.
