A terrorist network, in the common understanding, isn't
just a group of people inspired by similar ideals; it's
a structured group working together to plan and execute
a terrorist attack or series of attacks. There's no
evidence I know of that Hasan was part of such a group.
There's no evidence he ever shared what he was planning
with anybody else.

FWIW, I can see him thinking of what he did as a
sacrificial act. He'd been warning for quite some time
of the dangers of forcing Muslims to fight other Muslims,
but nobody seemed to be paying any attention. Maybe he
figured if he shot a bunch of people, the military would
recognize the threat and allow Muslim soldiers to be
released from service in Iraq and Afghanistan before
something even worse happened.

Obviously that doesn't even remotely excuse what he did.
But neither the standard terrorist profile nor the
standard crazy-person-who-suddenly-snaps profile seems
to me to fit him. So I wonder whether he isn't sui
generis.
