I got a Samsung NC10 + XP recently - and am very pleased
with it. But as I still have one or two ancient progs that
require CD installation, I bought an external CD RW DVD ROM
drive. Quite cheap, problem solved.

Instead of Word I use Google Docs and love it to bits.
(I never need most of Word's bells & whistles).
