The Eastern Establishment moderate Republicans who composed a large segment of
Republican Party during the 1960s who supported progressive social legislation
are now extinct. Following the passage of '60s Civil Rights legislation, the
Republican party's Southern Strategy encouraged entrenched southern racists to
align with the Republican party to maintain their racism-Republican god Ronald
Reagan chose tiny Philadelphia, Mississippi, the scene of a brutal triple
murder of 60s civil rights workers, to formally announce his 1980 candidacy.
