You make it sound as if all the myths associated with Shankara were literally 
true. The truth is many made-up things have been said about many historical 
personages, after the fact, east and west. Let's just say it's a pretty fancy 
story...

And keep in mind, M. was a bit more mundane in his affairs, i.e. he was in 
physical body and had his own "come on" lines, just like any other person 
(that's not to say Shankaran rationalizations are somehow "better").
