We probably know one another, as I was constantly around MMY in the
early to mid-70's. I observed that some people simply could not leave
the room where MMY was whilst others could not get away fast enough.

His presence was like flypaper to some and vinegar to others. Some
seemed to avoid his presence, others couldn't get enough of it.

My own feeling was that I didn't feel much of anything around him
except an undercurrent of intensity. But when I left the room, then I
began to feel all churned up (for want of a better way to put it).

There was energy around him, whether it was him or the room, I am not
sure, but in one-on-one meetings with him, even quite long ones,
there wasn't the same "aftershock". Similarly, the intensity was of a
different quality, as well. Was he more relaxed or was the level of
expectation in a roomfull what made the difference? I have no way of
knowing.

There's a lot to be said about 'sangha', the gathering of the
faithful, even when its a mixed bag of poly-focused faithfulnesses.
That kind of energy is very special, but I don't have any idea how to
say any more than that.

We learn from the guru/teacher. When we start attributing our
expectations to the guru/teacher, we have begun to miss the point of
his being. Some very good teachers, by my own definition, of course,
have discouraged this sort of behaviour. Their purpose was our
development and that was the end of that. -- In my time around MMY, I
think he began to, in a sense, give up. It was a kind of "OK, you
lot, if you want it your way, you might as well have it, you aren't
catching on, anyway."

>From what I saw (and I saw that there were groups with apparently
different experiences of what they saw and agreed upon) he/MMY had
expectations that the West would take up TM, be happy and give him
lots and lots of adulation.

This didn't happen and I saw him cave to the mundane wishes of the
paying punters. I think that that's too over the top, but there may
be some minor grains of significance in it.
