Berry season is here and I picked up another basket of fresh picked vine-ripened strawberries for $2 this morning at the farmer's market. After washing them and letting the dry I decided instead of using a knife to de-stem them I would go to the dollar store to see if they have the same stainless steel like berry stem tweezers like my mother had and I apparently didn't inherit. These would definitely be a dollar store item but no such luck. And neither did the drug store or the super market in their kitchen gadgets section or even in the supermarkets gadgets section for fruits.
Returning and looking online I found a "Strawberry Stem Remover" for $8! I recall the simple berry stem tweezers worked well but apparently whomever made them decided there wasn't enough profit or you might find them at a dollar store (I seem to recall they were sold there a couple years ago). "The Strawberry Stem" remover is a bit overkill as is a similar $3 device. Looks like the simpler version is a victim of the bad economy. Actually here is a video of the one my mother had: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbGJT-dN7xQ And I found it online for $2: https://www.lehmans.com/p-123-strawberry-huller.aspx One thing I noticed on Azgrey's post about artichokes a couple weeks ago was the web site of the place where he bought them had an interesting article on baking eggs in the shell instead of boiling them. Supposedly they peel easier that way and are tastier. So yesterday I tried it and indeed the eggs were easier to peel and tastier. So much for boiling them again. That's your "Bhairitu's Kitchen" article of the day.
