I think you can make the leap.  But certainly I'd be testing first.
If you find you can't, you should definitely be able to make steps
from 4 -> 5 -> 5.1 etc

The biggest issue surrounding an upgrade are the customisations you
may have in your solution.  Upgrading to v5 for example may impact any
security based customisations you have made and require some code
changes to accommodate.  If you're using the default "vanilla" install
then you shouldn't have any trouble.
