look for initclk.c (and for the why? in initdisk.c -- although I prefer b) -- because IMHO if the C starts looking like a clumsy form of assembly language I'd write it in assembly language); this works and it's initialization code anyway. The date should indeed be read twice but the problematic situation would only very rarely happen, when booting a PC at exactly the right time before midnight.
