I guess we don't chat so much as a group, but use email instead...and the few of us that do chat know each other's IDs on the other various chat clients.
This is not to say that a standard IRC channel is not a good idea, just hasn't been done.
Also, for me, Gaim doesn't seem to work well with IRC channels since it doesn't pop up a window or alert me when a message comes in, so I would pretty much be ignoring it all the time anyway.
