hi,

i'll throw in my $0.02 unbidden? :-} [i'm a software developer by
trade, i've worked at places big and small. i've done waterfall, i've
done agile. i've done embedded, i've done web. i've done java, c/++/#,
assembly, perl, pascal professionally, i've done lisp/scheme, sml,
prolog, o'caml, etc. in school or on the side.]

presumably a pre-requisite for someone to want to get involved is for
them to get to use Felix and understand it. you have to make the
entrance fee really low. (somebody could make an argument that if it
is too low then you get the riff-raff, but i think that's a
self-defeating argument, or simply indicates that the person making
the argument enjoys self-flagellation.)

i've been trying to get into using Felix for a while now and have gone
through the usual issues of not having stuff working locally because i
didn't set up my machine right, but then have also run into what i
currently still think are issues with e.g. the install scripts.

(hm, anybody know why when i try to build my hello.flx all I get is
"//Parsing Implementation std.flx" and then it seems to hang for
ever?)

back to the point / quote at the top of this message: having a
smoothly running environment in terms of revision control, building,
testing and installing - as well as docs, but that's more
pie-in-the-sky usually - would give a long-term return on investments,
and it would really let new folks get involved. i can't see how you
answering the raft of "how to build? why doesn't it work on my
machine? which branch actually builds?" questions ever again is a good
use of anybody's time.

i'd suggest that if you really do have $ that you fund somebody to get
all those infrastructure issues in tip-top shape first and foremost.
there are folks who actually *enjoy* doing that kind of work! (e.g. i
do, sometimes, under the right conditions, but more to the point i
know other people who really live and breathe it.)

it is sorta the "no broken windows" approach with a more holistic mindset.

yours sincerely (i really would love to use Felix and see it get a
super lively community!)
