I just moved into a huge house with tons of room, and I am looking into finishing the basement strictly for the cats, ie the columns I will get carpeted so they can climb, so space is not the issue I am concered about attention.

Crowding them too closely can create stress. If you have a small house and
are not in an area where the cats can go outside safely, then you might want
to keep the number down.
