FWIW, I recently finished porting all module code in KinoSearch to C. If we write binding code and port the test suite, it will be usable from Ruby.
KinoSearch is sort of a sister project to Ferret. The dev branch implements many of the ideas that Dave Balmain and I designed together for the Lucy project.
