The documentation[1] says "FFmpeg guarantees backward API and ABI compatibility for each library", followed by "Behavior in undocumented situations ... are accompanied by an entry in doc/APIchanges". It is not obvious to this average Joe why the AVOptions API would be an exception to that rule. Please submit a patch to libavutil/avutil.h that fixes the bug in the documentation.
