Good, I was hoping Deborah would reply :)

I am sure I've read that knitters were in guilds in England, doing their
apprenticeship, journeyman time, and finally a master project and
becoming masters, and I assumed that professional knitting in many other
European countries was also organized by/in guilds. What is a
professional knitter, if not a member of such an organization (even if
it's not a guild exactly)?

Care to share any details about the shirt? I'm drooling over the
thought of being able to handle it--even with white cotton gloves on :)
