At least in Germany, the story about breaking in linens went that the
"house" servants - the more trusted ones - got to do it. You didn't give
your good shirt to "just anybody".
Also, washing linens was done in a manner that tended to get spots -out -
using sun bleaching, etc. to get them back to their original whiteness.
