John, I used Corriedale when learning the drop spindle and the wheel. The staple length is about 3-5 inches.. Even after four years, I do better with the longer staple lengths. The other fiber I use a lot is Colonial Top which is a blend. It is a little more expensive than Corriedale.
Staple length is one of the factors that affect spinning. Some fibers are softer, thinner, shinier etc. Once you get the basic technique down, experiment with other fibers. to find what you like best. I found some books on spinning at the local library that explained different fibers as well as techniques.
