I'm sorry if us electronics types have confused you (and probably
ourselves :-)

Resolution in photographic terms means, as you say, ppi etc.

Resolution also refers to the size of the steps in the "grey scale". An
8-bit gives 256 possible values - a resolution of 1/256.  A 14-bit system
gives 16384 possible values - a much finer resolution.
