I'd be interested to know how others choose letters for their articulation
metatools for multiple placement of the same symbol.

My own scheme (which I'm not necessarily recommending to anyone else...) is
that my main metatool is the first letter of the name, and the secondary
metatool is the first consonant sound in the second syllable of the name.

Thus, staccato is S and K, tenuto is T and N, accent is A and X, fermata is
F and M.  (The vertical accent is V and W, so it's an exception to the
rule.)

I know it sounds screwy, but it works for me. I didn't ever sit down and
plan this out as a rule, it's just a pattern that evolved and now I'm used
to it.

What distinguishes my primary metatool from my secondary one is not the
same for each symbol. For instance, my staccato is S for noteside and K for
stemside; but with the accent, A is always above and X is always below.
For the most part, I get by with two of each, and if I need anything else I
adjust on an ad hoc basis.

I'm curious to know what other engravers use.
