I do pretty much the same thing: if the "continued" syllable of the hyphenated word occurs in the first measure of the lower system, then I use a text expression; if the syllable doesn't appear until later (long melismatic passages, for example) then I'll use the fixed-space on the first note of the lower system (to get multiple hyphens automatically).
