Only in the sense that it consistently doesn't. In many Mac applications, shift-arrow resembles a click-drag, so that it results in selecting text. I use this occasionally, when I've got skinny little characters and I want to make sure I select them right. It's particularly helpful in word processors where the space between italic and non-italic texts isn't very easy to grab with the mouse. I'm sure you'd hate it, since it's not the standard you're used to.
