I would say that, in comparing notation to memory, which one is the least
perfect depends on the time distance of the transfer.  For shorter periods
of time, memory is more accurate.  With each succeeding generation notation
closes the gap, and eventually overtakes.

Of course, for both methods there is wide variation in quality.  A
scrupulously accurate printed copy will beat out a lousy memory, and vice
versa.
