Bonnie,

I don't believe the iMAC comes with any PCI slots, therefore, you will need the G4 tower. Digidesign has just announced their 6.0 versiion for OS X. They say that there will be a speed increase with the dual processors. GET EXTRA RAM! It's relatively cheap. I believe, with OS X, the dual processors work on programs that are not written for dual processors also.

The machines need the fans. The best thing for you to do, is to move the MAC and mic as far away from each other as possible. You can also build a three sided Sonex foam enclosure around the computer (not too close, it has to breathe). You can also build a Sonex wall around you and the mic (not too close, you have to breathe too). The signal to noise ratio should make the noise unnoticeable or almost unnoticeable.

Best of luck,
Joel Sears

I know there are a few Mac gurus out there! My old 8600 Power Mac
finally died a grisly hard drive death and I need to replace it. I would
very much appreciate knowledgeable recommendations in the under 2 grand
price range.
I don't really need a dual processor, but I do need some speed, memory,
PCI slots and drive expandability, and as much audio connectivity as I can
get to do fairly small but quality audio/MIDI recording projects, with use
of some soft synth/sampler and FX plugins. With the bigger 2002 dual G4's
I've heard the fans are loud, a consideration since my mic gear is in the
same room, and I find computer noise just plain annoying. Has anyone used
the dual G4 867MHZ Power Mac? Does anyone know if the new 2003 Power Macs
have loud fans too? It doesn't look like iMac would give me the audio ins
and outs I need for everyday general teaching studio use. Have people found
the dual processor Macs useful/problematic/overkill for audio and/or
software applications? Your suggestions would help! Thanks,
Bonnie
