[Finale] Chord entry conundrum (new to finale but not to sequencing software)

I am writing a chart where I want to have a bass line with chords as a rhythm section lead sheet (for want of a better term). The bass doesn't begin at bar 1 but I would like to indicate the chord changes but I haven't been able to enter chords because finale 2003a seems stuck on the idea of entering chords only if they are attached to notes. Is there a simple way either with midi input or typing directly into the score, to enter chords into the bass part without adding extra notes. I just want the chord symbols indicated independently of the bass line but on the bass chart. Thanks, Steve
