here's my work-around.  Download and install Ghostview and Ghostscript.  Then,
install a Postscript printer, setting the driver to print to file.  When you
wish to create a ~.pdf, do so by printing to the postscript printer, then open
the resulting postscript printer file in Ghostview, and converting to a ~.pdf.

Yes I know it works; this is how I generally do it.
