A hard hyphen certainly is available and possible. In the Mac we use
Option-hyphen to create a hard, non-breaking, ("graphic," you might say)
hyphen.


The Opt-hyphen on the Mac is actually an m-dash, which is longer than a hyphen. This kind of thing might not be important to us guys writing for community choirs, but for publication it is important.
