Others may disagree, but IMHO the proper pronunciation of place names is the pronunciation used by the natives, not what it looks like on paper.

And no non-native can figure out how to pronouce Polish or Welsh words from the way they look (like the Duke University basketball coach)!
As for Polish, the language is as phonetic as Spanish, provided the diacritic marks are preserved. The real problem is that Slavic languages have consonant strings that other folks consider unpronounceable, e.g. skrzypce ("violin"), wh., is pronounced SKSHIPtseh. Coach Krzyzewski's name is pronounced kshiZEFskee--at least, it would be in Poland.
