I think the greatest example in recent technology would be pdf files.  Adobe
eagerly distributes the Acrobat Reader for free to make the Distiller worth
buying for those wanting to produce universally-readable content.  That sure
worked for Adobe, and it's been beneficial for consumers too. (Except I miss
getting software manuals in the box.)
