One correspondent highly endorses the M-AUDIO MIDISPORT 1x1 as being the
*only* adapter that will work with Classic.
No, not the *only* one -- but I've yet to come across someone with an M-Audio interface that couldn't get it to work in Classic. Other interfaces (i.e., the Roland) may work in Classic (others report some success), but they seem to be trickier and more dependent on your hardware configuration. The M-Audio interfaces generally work no matter what model Mac you are using.
Another correspondent says that Coda told him that the Ediron (Roland) UM-2 is the only thing that works with OS 9. (Apparently, it also works with OS X, so that might be the way to go so I'll be ready when I have cash for upgading from Finale 2002 to one that is compatible with OSX.
No, no, no, no, no. Like I said before, the M-Audio interfaces also work just fine (for me, at least) in OS 9 as well.
But if you're *not* going to get Finale 2004 right away, and you're *not* going to use Classic (i.e., you're going to stick with OS 9 all the time until you *can* afford an OS X-compatible Finale), it probably doesn't matter what MIDI interface you get. This is only an issue because Classic is so temperamental. The M-Audio, the Roland, and just about every other Mac-compatible MIDI interface on the market works just fine in OS 9 and just fine in OS X. It's only when you're running a MIDI app in the Classic environment that your run into problems.
The new G4 has OS 9.2 and OS 10.3. IT DOES HAVE AN INTERNAL MODEM AND THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED SOME OF THE PROBLEM.
Not if you are using a USB MIDI interface. The internal modem is irrelevant.
I could get the Keyspan to play a note (not a chord) on the keyboard with FreeMIDI, but if I hit a note on the keyboard, there was nothing.
Again, like I said, DON'T USE FREEMIDI if you are going to try to use Finale in Clasic. Use OMS.
(I know some people have had success with FreeMIDI + Classic, but again I think that's a quirk of hardware + software configuration. The most reliable solution I've found is M-Audio interface plus OMS.)
Anyway, any recommendations from Mac users in this list on reasonably priced USB MIDI interfaces that you KNOW works with 9.2 and 10.3 on a dual-boot G4 Mac with an internal modem would be greatly appreciated.
I don't understand your reluctance to get the M-Audio interface. I've already told you it works in both OS 9 and OS X, and told you exactly how to get it to work in Classic. Lots of other people on the list will tell you it works. If for some strange reason it *doesn't* work, you can return it, but it's worked for me and it's worked for everyone else I've recommended it to (some of whom are regulars on this list).
