Sorry for the delay...I've been wanting to check my own Finale on my computer but it's being moved. My recollection about adjusting syllables is that while two handles appear, the bottom handle is the only one you need. I do not actually know what the top handle is for. I've always just clicked the handle nearest the syllable itself and then moved it.
The top handle is used for the alignment and justification functions, which by definition apply to the whole stack of syllables.
Curiously, if you select a single syllable you cannot access alignment or justification through the menu, but you *can* access it right-click contextual menu (in which case your selection applies to the whole stack).
Most of this is meaningless if you only have one verse, which is probably why you never noticed.
