i still haven't figured out what the problem was, but in the mean time ran norton twice and disk warrior before even being able to boot, reinstalled system, began to de-fragment a "severely" fragmented HD until norton stopped... and my HD disappeared. that was a fun moment. was able to boot from software restore in order to copy entire HD to DVD and then zero-formatted my HD and reinstalled OS, upgrading to 9.2.2. that was day one. day two has been reinstallations of software, PI, prefs, etc. etc. yadda yadda...
thanks for the tips adriel and darcy, everything seems to be running properly... so far. the one good thing is that i've finally gotten that mega-backup done i've been meaning to do for quite some time now. of course the most important dumbputer problems NEVER happen at a convenient time...
