Hey! I've been meaning to ask around this too.
From my long past youth of playing drums I count 3 different kinds of rim shots -
a. the classic one stick across and a whack across it from the other stick:. the 'gunshot' I'll call it.
b. with both sticks hitting both drum rim and head -- the 'stripper' I'll call it.
c. the very pale rim hit only -- which while largely useless nonetheless creates interesting (or can create) variations within a stolidly snare drum sound. I don't know what to call it...
How should these be distinguished (notationally speaking) - aside from somewhat elaborate verbal instructions?
Jerry Berg
The choice betw. A and B should be left to the player, and should be pretty clear from context. C is not a rim shot--because there is no "shot." The instruction for it is "on the rim."
