Martin said he has a new PowerBook G4, so there's absolutely no need for him to go scouring eBay for OS 9.2.2. A fully functional Classic system folder (OS 9.2.2) came preinstalled on his computer.
What he's asking about is an error message that pops up when you try to install Finale 2003 in Classic -- it tells you to boot into OS 9 before installing Finale. Martin's computer (like all Macs released since January 2003) doesn't boot OS 9.
The solution in this case is simply to ignore the warning message. That's all there is to it. Finale installs just fine in the Classic environment.
I think your use of the phrase "boot into classic" might be misleading for a newbie. There is no way to get Martin's PowerBook to boot OS 9 -- that's simply not possible. He will be running Finale 2003 from within the Classic environment, but he will still be booting into OS X -- since that's the only OS his computer supports.
I've never heard of MIDIBridge9X -- in some cases it may be helpful, I don't know. But Martin should know that it's not necessary to install any third-party applications in order to use MIDI in the Classic environment. It's usually sufficient to simply install the OS X *and* the OS 9 drivers for whatever MIDI interface you have, plus OMS, of course. Some MIDI interfaces work better in Classic than others -- I've had the best luck with the M-Audio MIDISport series of interfaces. Unfortunately, the type of MIDI keyboard that plugs directly into the computer's USB port (like the Oxygen8) doesn't work in Classic -- you will still need an external MIDI interface, like a MIDISport or something similar.

If you are a new Mac user you might not know that not all Macs can boot into System 9 any more. However they can boot into classic and if with the use of a shareware app called MidiBridge9X you can use finale on OS X (with midi ins and outs). Even without MidiBridge9X finale will run in Classic Mode, which is System 9 running inside OS X.
So, you need system 9.2.2 which you could probably by cheaply and legally on ebay.
If your computer can boot from system 9 your done. If not, you would have to find some way to force the installation of Finale. It's doable, but you might have to mess around a bit.
I'd be happy to help, email the list or me directly, and surely there are other very savvy mac users on this list who are willing also.

I just got a new Mac Powerbook G4 Laptop computer, and when I tried to install FinMac 2003 onto it, I got a dialogue box that says since this will be running in Classic, to reboot the computer in OS9 and then install Finale.
There is no OS9 on this computer. Now what?
