Is this a Mac/PC difference? Updaters and patches from Finale have always
in the past updated the application itself (I stopped at 2003).

The default of many full applications is a new installation rather than an
overwrite. Many other full applications overwrite only when the current
application path is accepted; otherwise they perform a new install.

I'm grateful most applications are *not* so smart as to overwrite! I'm
glancing at my frequent app list and see that Finale, Netscape, Sonar,
Opera, AudioMulch, Cool Edit, Video Factory, Eudora, Paint Shop Pro, GIF
Construction Set and Analog Box are among those that only overwrite if
requested.

Those that very annoyingly update with no choice are Internet Explorer and
all the Adobe applications I have. I'm hoping that now that Adobe has taken
over Cool Edit that the next Adobe Audition upgrade (which did not
overwrite Cool Edit Pro) will behave itself and give me a separate
application path.

There's a good reason for not updating the application unless requested:
Bugs. For example, Cool Edit 2000 worked fine with all VST plugins, but
Cool Edit Pro did not, nor does Adobe Audition. Had it done an automatic
overwrite, I would have lost access to some very important plugins that
still work by switching over to the original Cool Edit 2000.

Likewise, I happily have several Finale installs so I can edit earlier
scores from others without making them incompatible for previous versions
when I send them back.
