Here's my $0.02: I would consider these points to be my opinions, certainly open to
debate & discussion, based on 20+ years in business.

*Finale is a mature product now.
*There are going to be few meaningful improvements in notation from now on.
*Therefore, most of the yearly "improvements" are most likely to be more things like
rhyming dictionaries and drumline playback, rather than meaningful improvements to the
core product.
*Most of the existing bugs have existed for some time, and do not grossly affect the
casual user, so the probability of their being fixed in the near future is low.
*Additionally, to keep cash coming in, MM has to "parcel out" the bugfixes or notation
improvements, or a major reason to "subscribe" has fallen away--so don't expect
everything to be fixed this year.
*MM will rely to a large extent on the plugin developers for notation improvements and
workarounds for existing long-term bugs as it concentrates on adding more frills and
features for music teachers.
*For the past few years, MM has operated on a "subscription" basis with Finale yearly
upgrades.
*What many of us see as "frills" exist because Finale is mature and MM needs to keep
the cash coming in.
*The "big time notation" segment of Finale users is small compared to the "casual
user" segment, so MM needs to direct its resources more towards those casual users
*It's unclear whether SmartMusic revenue has come even close to reaching MM's
projections, and that will cramp the whole company.

So...be ready for yearly upgrades that are increasing parts frill and decreasing parts
notation improvements. If you are a "serious notator" you will likely be upgrading
less often unless you make a practice of upgrading every time.
At least in my case--much more than a casual user but not a 100% notation
professional, I will not be upgrading unless 2005 offers much more notationally than
"improved tuplets." I've worked around that for years and can continue to do so.

Discussion welcome; flames tolerated.

I think this is what I'll be doing to, Ãric, because when a firm
announces a product release, whatever it is, one expects, at least,
something slightly better compared to the basis of the previous same kind
of product. When this doesn't happen the first time, customers will be
much more suspicious and will evaluate carefully before investing more
        money, a second time
