I don't think the number of times you crack the case open matters -- do it once and your warranty is void. Who cares how many times after that first time you crack it open, as far as warranty coverage goes.

I agree with your desire not to open the case often, however, in that the less frequently you crack it open, the less likely you are to damage something else.

And in something like the Mac Mini, I, too, would go with what Apple uses, since not all RAM is created equal and MBTF notwithstanding, some RAM gives off more heat than others and in such a tiny case that would be a crucial consideration I would think.
