Assuming you are indeed hitting the spacebar to move to the next chord (the characters always show funny until you move on), make sure that in Document Options>Fonts>Chord: Alteration is Jazz probably 24 point, not JazzText or anything else. Then the b will automatically change into the flat once you move on.
