Re: Brahms
This is not to say that a great composer could be religious (Christian I assume) and be totally in the wrong with God. So we could have a great religious composer who is actually in hell. Where does that fit? Illusion is all?
Western composing originated within the church -- so in some sense if you consider yourself a composer there is that element inevitably.
For myself God and creation are synonymous -- now start swimming!
Read this wonderful article on physics. I felt it so tied to ideas on creativity and the phenomenon of originality.
My crude summary of what the article is about:
Universal truths are a chimera -- long live ' weather' for it is truly the alive. What does weather mean in this context? Read the piece.

Just for your information, Ryamond, I find this attitude far more offensive than anything David has said. I am an Atheist.
I also believe that this question is completely misleading, as not many people in the 18th or 19th century would admit to being an atheist, since it was dangerous, certainly for a composer.
I could name you a few where I personally suspect that they were atheists, but I fear this would lead to more controversal discussions.
Finally I would like to support David on the note that Brahms was indeed full of shit.
And you can stop reading here now, if this offends you.
