Sounds like you did everything right. I assume he has a version of Notepad that is 2003 or later? And that his computer WILL run Notepad (that is, it is modern enough and has all the right operating system and all that)?
One last thing that sometimes has to happen: if he double-clicks on the file and it doesn't open, sometimes it WILL open using control-O from inside Finale.
If you send me the file privately, I will try to open it to see if indeed the file is good.
