I quite agree. I left the mailing list of the Society for Musical Analysis not too long after joining it. I got the impression that the moderator was partisan (protecting the views of his Schenkerian friends from contradiction), and discovered from private emails that others shared my opinion. This was some time ago, and I don't recall who it was.
The best way to run a list is to expect the contributors to be moderate themselves, excluding them, after due warning, if they transgress persistently.
